• Make sure your health insurance contribution is paid
  Your health insurance contribution must be paid before you leave on holiday. Only then can you rely on the reimbursement of any medical care during your trip, and turn to Mediphone Assist for travel assistance.
   
• Take the right travel documents with you.
  Do you need medical care abroad? Then prove with your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or another document that you are in order with your mandatory health insurance in Belgium.
  Check which travel documents you need at your holiday destination. Thanks to the My Helan app, you always have your European Health Insurance Card digitally in your pocket! 
   
• Notify planned medical care
  You may be going abroad for a planned procedure. Contact us well in advance and let us know which care you will receive there. Then Helan will arrange for your reimbursement and we'll get everything sorted out for you.

Do you need to prove that you are in order with Belgian mandatory health insurance during a doctor's visit while travelling? The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles you to a refund for unexpected medical care. 

Conditions

The EHIC proves that you can be reimbursed for medical care abroad. This way, you only have to pay the patient fees (and possible supplements) yourself.

How to apply for a EHIC?

Having a EHIC is not compulsory. However, it does make the paperwork easier during your stay. You can apply for the card in different ways. You can obtain a digital EHIC on your smartphone, or you can apply for a paper version, both through My Helan.

What is the difference between the EHIC and Mediphone Assist?

• The EHIC proves that you are in order with legal health insurance. This card ensures the reimbursement of legal medical expenses.
• Mediphone Assist is an additional service provided by Helan. They assist you with advice, arrange repatriation or ensure reimbursement for urgent hospitalisation.
