Incapacity for work and benefits

Are you employed, unemployed or self-employed? Are you incapacitated for work due to illness, an accident or hospitalisation? Submit a declaration to your health insurance fund in good time. See what you need to do at the start, during and after your incapacity for work, and what your rights and responsibilities are.

When you are incapacitated for work

Are you incapacitated for work for less than one year? We refer to this as ‘primary incapacity for work’. If you are incapacitated for work for over one year, you receive invalidity status and will receive invalidity benefits.

Want to go on holiday, return to work on a part-time basis, do voluntary work or take a training course? Then be sure to check your rights and responsibilitiesfirst.

If your incapacity for work lasts longer than initially expected, you will get an extension. Did you return to work and then become incapacitated again within two weeks after a period of incapacity of less than a year? Or did you become incapacitated again within three months after being incapacitated for over one year? In both cases, this is referred to as a relapse.

Return to work/end of incapacity for work

When your incapacity ends, you can go back to work. If you want, a return-to-work coach can guide you through your reintegration into work.
