Even while temporarily staying abroad, you could be hospitalised. Read here about the coverage you can depend on receiving and what you should consider when travelling abroad.
A multi-day hospitalisation abroad is covered by Helan's hospitalisation insurance policies. First, the mandatory insurance intervenes to reimburse costs covered by statutory health insurance. The amount remaining after this will be reimbursed by your hospitalisation insurance.
Please note: If a limitation was imposed due to a pre-existing condition, that limitation will also apply to any admission abroad.
The cost of a day admission while in a foreign country is not reimbursed by Helan's hospitalisation insurance.
Did you end up in hospital while on holiday? Helan customers are advised to call Mediphone Assist as soon as possible. Mediphone Assist is the health insurance fund's travel assistance centre. You will receive a payment guarantee if you call within 48 hours of your admission. The Mediphone Assist medical assistance team will also consult with the local physician to determine the best medical approach. This way, you always get the right medical help, even when you are in a foreign country.
Always take your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you when you go abroad. That card proves that you are in entitled to Belgian health insurance abroad. Helan customers always have their EHIC in their pocket digitally, on the My Helan app!
