Living with a condition or disability

Living with a condition or disability can be challenging. Whether it’s autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or a physical or mental disability, Helan surrounds you with warm, supportive care. Together, we help remove barriers.

Condition, disability or handicap?

The difference between a condition, a disability and a handicap mainly lies in how the person experiences it. In short:

  • A condition is a variation that can be objectively diagnosed by a doctor or psychologist. There are different types of conditions, ranging from mental health and cognitive conditions to physical abnormalities. A condition is not an illness, but it can be the result of one.
  • If a condition makes it harder for you to carry out certain activities, we refer to this as a disability. For example, it may be more challenging to take care of yourself, to walk or to express yourself. With the right support or adjustments, things often become easier.
  • Do you experience a long-term and significant difficulty in participating in everyday life because of your disability? Then we speak of a handicap. There are many types of handicaps, from physical and intellectual to multiple disabilities. But much depends on how you see it yourself. Your personal experience determines whether you use the term handicap.

How does a condition develop?

In most cases, there isn’t a single clear cause for the development of a condition. It is often the result of a complex interaction between genetic predisposition and environmental factors. If a particular condition runs in your family, you may inherit it. But this is not always the case. Your lifestyle and any traumatic experiences can also play a role in the development of a condition.

Diagnosing and treating a condition

Autism, ADHD, eating disorders, stuttering: the list of conditions is long and the causes vary widely. This can make diagnosing and treating a condition more complex.

Always consult a qualified professional, such as a GP, psychologist, psychiatrist or another specialist. Based on an assessment, they can provide a diagnosis and start appropriate treatment. This helps you regain control and improve your overall wellbeing.

Treating a condition often involves a combination of:

  • Education: clear information helps you better understand your diagnosis, its impact and the skills that can support you.
  • Medication: in some cases, medication can provide support. Always consult a doctor for the right approach and dosage.
  • Therapy: psychotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy… There is tailored support available for every need. Don’t hesitate to reach out.
