What does a midwife do?
A midwife is medically trained to monitor the health of both mother and baby, provide medical care, and support women during childbirth. This care can be provided both in hospital and at home.
Your midwife will monitor your pregnancy and help you stay as healthy and comfortable as possible throughout your pregnancy. They will also prepare you thoroughly for childbirth.
Your midwife will support and guide you throughout both labour and childbirth.
After you are discharged from the hospital, your midwife will visit you at home. They will monitor your recovery and your baby's health, while also providing advice on feeding and caring for your baby.
Specifically, your midwife will provide:
During the first 5 days, your midwife will often visit you daily. From day 6 onwards, they can make up to 6 additional home visits. With a medical justification or doctor's certificate, up to 3 extra visits are possible until your baby is 1 year old, provided that the first 6 additional visits have been used.
Is a midwife essential?
A midwife is not mandatory, but they can provide valuable support before and after your baby's birth. They offer not only medical care and support for both you and your baby, but also take the time to answer your questions and discuss any concerns you may have. In addition, you are entitled to reimbursement for up to 21 visits: 12 before and 9 after your baby's birth.
