What is maternity care?
Maternity care is there for you when you’re in the final weeks of pregnancy or have just given birth. You can rely on maternity care from one month before your due date until three months after the birth.
How much does maternity care cost and how much will you be reimbursed?
The cost of maternity care depends on your income and the number of dependants. The maximum amount you pay per hour is €9.90. Calculate your own rate using the contribution scale of the Department of Care. Please note that the calculation is different in the case of multiple births.
As a Helan customer, you receive an additional €5 per hour reimbursement on top of the statutory reimbursement, with a maximum of 30 hours, meaning up to €150 per child or €300 if both parents are affiliated with Helan. In the case of twins, this benefit is paid out twice.
Do you also have hospitalisation insurance? Then you may be entitled to even more reimbursement. Submit your invoice and you will receive the amount directly into your account.

What can a maternity care worker do for you?
Maternity care workers are specifically trained to provide maternity support and take over both care-related and light household tasks from you.
You decide what type of support you need:
- household support before and after your delivery: vacuuming, ironing and cooking
- care for your baby
- support and advice on feeding and baby care
- looking after your other children
- helping you protect your rest periods

How do you arrange maternity care?
You can easily do this using this online application form. This way, you can be sure that the right support is available when you need it.
We will visit you 1 to 2 months before your expected due date to listen to your needs and prepare your file. Together, we determine the number of hours and the frequency of support you need.
Your maternity care worker will start on the agreed date and at the requested time. Of course, your baby’s birth date may differ or your support needs may change during your pregnancy. We will remain flexible in these situations.
We aim to create a good connection between you and your care worker. That is why we regularly ask for your feedback.
The difference between a maternity care worker and a midwife
Maternity care workers and midwives both provide support before and after the birth of a child, but their roles are significantly different.

A maternity care worker mainly focuses on the care and support of the mother and baby during the maternity period, from 1 month before to 3 months after the birth. The maternity care worker helps with baby care, provides support with breastfeeding and contributes to the well-being of the mother, including household tasks and hygiene care.

A midwife supports the pregnant woman throughout the entire pregnancy, childbirth and the period immediately after birth. They provide medical care, monitor the health of both mother and baby, and can also assist with births, both at home and in hospital.

How much you pay depends on your income and the number of dependants. This is calculated according to the contribution scale set by the Department of Care. If you are expecting multiples, a different calculation applies. Feel free to get in touch if you would like a free estimate.
To offer you the best possible support, Helan Health Insurance reimburses €5 per hour for maternity care. A maximum of €150 per year applies, or 30 hours of maternity care per affiliated parent, per child. If both you and your partner are affiliated with Helan Health Insurance, you are therefore entitled to 60 hours of maternity care. You can also get a contribution for maternity care through your hospitalisation insurance.
You will receive an invoice for your costs in the month following the month in which your maternity carer visited you. The invoice will always be issued in the mother’s name.

It’s best to apply for maternity care as soon as you know you’re pregnant. That way, you can be sure support will be there when you need it.
No, you don’t have to. You can also apply for maternity care via Helan if you’re affiliated with another health insurance fund. In that case, you’ll of course request the reimbursement from your own health insurance fund.
Maternity care is available in all regions, but only within Belgium.
You can rely on maternity care from one month before your due date, and for up to three months after the birth.
If you are expecting multiples (three babies or more), you can make use of maternity care for a longer period.
