Answers to all your questions about household help

Getting started with household help

How do you pay for your household help? How does the service voucher system work? How long does it take to be assigned a household helper? We guide you through all your questions so your collaboration can get off to a smooth start.

Do you already have a household helper and would you prefer them to work through Helan Household Help? Absolutely possible. Register them with Helan and enjoy the benefits together.

Your household helper receives a permanent contract, attractive fringe benefits and personal coaching. You can make affordable use of service vouchers and are insured if anything happens. Discover here how to register your household helper with Helan Household Help.

How quickly we can match you with a household helper depends on where you live and how many hours of support you’re looking for. In some regions, we can get started quickly; in others, there may be a longer waiting time. After you submit your request, we’ll contact you straight away to discuss the options.

One working hour equals one service voucher:

  • In the Flemish Region, you pay €10 per hour with service vouchers for the first 400 hours per year and €11 from the 401st voucher onwards. Since 2025, service vouchers are no longer tax deductible in Flanders.
  • In the Brussels-Capital Region, you pay €11.40 per hour for the first 300 vouchers and €14 per voucher from number 301 onwards. In Brussels, service vouchers are no longer tax deductible in 2026 either. A tax reduction still applies for the 2025 tax year.

On top of the amount per service voucher, you also pay an administrative customer contribution in the Flemish Region of €1.90 per hour worked; in the Brussels Region, this is €0.30. This allows us to keep investing in training, safety and prevention measures, and ensures our team of consultants can properly support your household helper.

Are you also a member of Helan Health Insurance? Then you receive a €55 discount, automatically deducted from your invoice.

Of course, besides the cost of service vouchers and the customer contribution, there are other expenses to consider, such as cleaning materials.

You can easily pay for your Helan household help with service vouchers. You order your electronic service vouchers via Pluxee (Sodexo). Then you pay your household helper with just one click in the Helan Household Help app.

More about the cost of a household helper

You pay for your household help with service vouchers, but we also ask for a customer contribution. This contribution ensures that Helan Household Help, as a social enterprise, can continue to safeguard the wellbeing of its household helpers.

As soon as your household helper gets started, you’ll need service vouchers. Service vouchers are a simple and affordable way to arrange household help. You can order them online or via the app from Pluxee (formerly Sodexo). They used to be available in paper form, but since 2025 only the electronic version can be ordered.

Thanks to the service voucher system, you know exactly how much you pay your household helper. Curious about the salary and fringe benefits for household helpers at Helan? Find out more here.

Planning and appointments for household help

Can you choose when your household helper comes by? Can you request extra support? Here’s everything you need to know about planning your household help, so you can rest easy.

With the Helan Household Help app, you always have your schedule at your fingertips. Want to view your cleaning sessions, adjust your schedule or request extra hours? You can do it all with just a tap on your screen.

To make it easy to communicate with your household help and agree on tasks, we’ve developed a cleaning planner. Just ask your adviser or household help for more information.

Under Belgian law, anyone who works six hours or more without a break is entitled to one. In practice, we see that customers often offer their household help a short break after two hours of work. This usually means a cup of coffee or a small snack.

A household task outside the home? No problem for your household help. Unless it’s extremely cold or hot outdoors, of course. In that case, it’s best to postpone those tasks for a while. Here you’ll find plenty of tips and advice for working in extremely hot or cold temperatures.

No need to worry. Our household helps are trained to work safely. If something does go wrong, we have comprehensive insurance for damage and workplace accidents.

  • Damage: Helan will intervene for damage exceeding 250 euros. Please inform your adviser within 7 days of the incident so we can take the necessary steps. You can submit a claim via the app or email your adviser.
  • Accident: Has your household help had an accident in your home, such as a fall down the stairs? If it’s serious, contact the emergency services or a doctor first. Then inform your adviser as soon as possible.

Yes, you can cancel your cleaning help at any time. Please note that a notice period of one month applies. This allows us to wrap everything up properly and find a new workplace for your household help. You can submit your notice to your adviser via the Household Help app or by email.

Your household helper at work

What happens when your household helper comes for the first time? Which materials do you need to provide? And can you ask your household helper to carry out any household task? Here’s a clear overview.

Of course. We make sure that your household help receives the necessary training. From time to time, a cleaning coach may also join them to provide on-the-job guidance. Naturally, we’ll inform you in advance and there is no extra charge for this.

Do you need to be at home when your household help visits for the first time? What does that first working day look like? And what information should you share to ensure a smooth and pleasant collaboration?

You’ll find the answers to these questions and much more on the page with tips and advice for your household help’s first working day.

In four hours, a household help can get a lot done. What’s feasible depends on your home, your expectations and your priorities. During the start-up, we look at what matters most to you, so your household help can focus on that from day one.

Your household help can vacuum, mop, cook, do minor sewing repairs, iron, dust and clean windows in the private areas of your home.

Some tasks are not allowed. This is because they may be unsafe, harmful to health or prohibited by law. In this way, we help prevent physical strain for our household helps and ensure you can continue to rely on extra support at home.

Your household help works with the materials and products you have at home. Go through them together and see whether anything extra needs to be purchased. Click here for a full overview of safe materials and products.
