Retirement
After a successful career, are you ready for your well-deserved retirement? Enjoy your rest without worries? Still have many plans to fulfill? Helan will continue to be there for you, even after your retirement.
Applying for your retirement
The best news? You don’t have to do anything yourself to request your retirement. We will guide you through the process.
You will automatically receive a letter in the mail informing you that your retirement entitlement is being assessed.
If you have not received any notification 11 months before your statutory retirement age, it is best to contact the pension service yourself.
Your health insurance fund will also automatically receive a notification of your retirement application. We will check whether you are entitled to an increased reimbursement and will inform you accordingly.
Types of retirement
There are many different types of retirement. Each has its own features and conditions. We list them for you.
At the end of your career, when you are 65 years old, you receive a so-called retirement pension in Belgium.
If your spouse passes away when you are 48 years or older and you have been married for at least one year, you are entitled to a survivor’s pension.
Before you turn 65, you can apply for early retirement. Bridge retirement is a form of unemployment that you can apply for in certain sectors.
The IGO is a social benefit for retired people whose pension is lower than the minimum amount. It is an additional allowance on top of a low pension.
Retired abroad?
Spending your retirement abroad is a dream for many. Are you retired and moving across the border? Remember to inform the Belgian Pension Service and your health insurance fund about your move. We are happy to help you ensure a smooth transition.
Questions or need advice?
Helan is of course happy to help you. However, for some specific questions or concerns, it is better to contact specialized services. We will point you in the right direction.

What about your hospitalisation insurance?
A hospitalisation insurance through your employer has its advantages. But when you retire, your employer’s policy ends and you are no longer protected against high costs in case of a hospital admission.
Hospitalia Continuity waiting policy protects you for life. Does your employer’s policy end? Don’t forget to convert your Hospitalia Continuity into a full-fledged hospitalization insurance with us. No waiting period, no medical questionnaire and no extra costs. And you can already count on additional reimbursements for hospitalisation.
