Practical questions about dental care
What is dental insurance?
Dental insurance is an additional insurance you take out alongside your membership with a health insurance fund. Your health insurance fund already reimburses part of the cost of your dental care. But not everything. Especially for periodontology, prostheses, implants and orthodontics for children, costs can quickly add up. An additional dental insurance ensures these costs are covered.
Please note: not all dental care costs are covered by the statutory health insurance. If a treatment is not reimbursed by the statutory health insurance, you will not receive a reimbursement through your dental insurance either.
That’s why more than a quarter of people in Flanders already choose to take out additional dental insurance today.
What does dental insurance cover?
Dentalia Up dental insurance reimburses up to €4,000 per person for orthodontics for children and young people, prostheses, implants, periodontology, preventive and curative dental care and unexpected costs following an accident or cancer.

Why take out dental insurance?
An annual visit to the dentist is a good idea for everyone. But perhaps someone in your family needs more extensive dental care? Dental insurance then offers excellent additional protection: you receive the best possible dental care, without worrying about the cost.
What are the benefits of dental insurance?
The cost of dental corrections can quickly add up. If you need braces, the bill can easily reach €3,700. For bridges, prostheses and crowns, the average cost is around €1,600. Another reason for these high costs: around 40% of dentists and 80% of orthodontists in Flanders are non-contracted, meaning they charge supplements that are not reimbursed by the statutory health insurance.
With dental insurance, you’re well protected against the cost of dental corrections. Dentalia Up reimburses up to €4,000 per year.
When do you need dental insurance?
There are many situations where you or your children may need dental care. The statutory health insurance does not reimburse a large number of dental costs. Here are a few situations in which you receive additional reimbursement through Dentalia Up:
- 100% for preventive dental care, such as oral examinations, fissure sealants, gum checks, ...
- Up to 80% for curative dental care, such as fillings, tooth extractions and dental radiology.
- Up to 80% for prostheses, implants and periodontology.
- 60% for early and standard orthodontics for children and young people.
- 100% for unforeseen dental costs following an accident or cancer.
How much does dental insurance cost?
