How does a personal alarm button for older people work?
Using your personal alarm system couldn’t be easier. Simply press the alarm button – the alarm centre takes care of the rest:
- Press the alarm button when you need help.
- The alarm centre receives your emergency call and checks if everything is alright.
- If you don’t respond or indicate that something is wrong, the alarm centre contacts your first emergency contact*. If they don’t answer, the second and then third emergency contact will be notified. As a last resort, the alarm centre will contact the emergency services.
- Your contact person or a professional caregiver will come to assist you.
* Ideally, you provide 3 emergency contacts who live at different addresses. These people:
- have access to your home
- are reachable by phone
- can be on site quickly
Even without a network of family or neighbours, you can rely on the alarm centre through our professional intervention subscription.
Can’t provide emergency contacts who can reach you quickly in case of need? Then you can rely on a network of professional caregivers. With this subscription, we’ll send a caregiver to your home when an alert is triggered.
If you want to use this network, you’ll need to have a key safe. This allows caregivers to access your home. You can purchase a key safe via Helan. We can deliver it together with the PAS device. Please note that you install the key safe yourself.

Types of personal alarm systems with an alarm centre
Buying a personal alarm system without an alarm centre?
Prefer to buy a device instead of renting one? You can do so via Helan Healthcare Shop, our care shop. Here, you can purchase a safety watch. Please note: a purchased safety watch is not connected to an alarm centre. When you press the button, your informal carers are contacted directly, 24/7.
Want to cancel the rental of your personal alarm system?
- Do you have a device installed before 01/01/2023 (= the logo on the device is Tele-hulp or OZ)? Then return the device, including all accessories, via a bpost Secur parcel to: Tele-hulp, de Smet de Naeyerlaan 570, 1020 Brussels. Also contact Tele-hulp to inform them that you are returning the device and wish to cancel your subscription. Your subscription ends when Tele-hulp has received the returned device.
- Do you have a device installed after 01/01/2023 (= the logo on the device is Helan)? Then request a collection via Helan Health Insurance. You can do this by completing the contact form or by calling 02 218 22 22 and selecting the equipment loan service option. Your contract will be cancelled once the collection has been confirmed by email. Your device will be collected within 10 working days after your cancellation has been confirmed.
