Divorce
Going through a divorce means a number of changes are needed to your health insurance file, and possibly your children’s as well. What you need to do depends on the type of divorce and your family situation.
Feitelijk of wettelijk gescheiden

Good to know
A divorce naturally has a major impact on your personal life. It also affects your health insurance file. It’s important to inform Helan Health Insurance of your divorce as soon as possible. You can easily do this digitally via My Helan.
Reimbursements for children
Dependent children must be registered with one of the two parents. You can decide this together. Prefer not to choose or unable to agree? Then the children will be registered with the contributor at whose address they are officially domiciled. The following rules apply to children’s healthcare costs:
- No health insurance contributions are charged for dependent children.
- Reimbursements are paid into the account of the parent with whom the children are registered as dependents.
- If a child falls ill while staying with the other parent and that parent pays the costs, the reimbursement can be paid once into that parent’s account. This must be requested in writing.
- You may consider using a ‘children’s account’ to which both parents have access.
- Via My Helan, you can grant the other parent access to your child’s file, provided they are also a member of Helan Health Insurance.
Additional insurance
A divorce also has an impact on additional insurance. Here’s a clear overview:
- The health insurance contribution is split from the first month after the de facto or legal separation.
- Any entitlement to increased reimbursement will be reassessed.
- The care contribution for the Flemish social protection is split from the year following the de facto or legal separation.
- The insurance file is split.
