Rehabilitation after your hospital admission
Are you admitted to the rehabilitation department of a general hospital or to a recognised rehabilitation hospital? Or have you been discharged from hospital and do you need to continue your rehabilitation at home? On this page, you can read which reimbursements are covered by your hospitalisation insurance.
Rehabilitation in a hospital
Are you admitted to a rehabilitation department in a hospital? Then your hospitalisation insurance will provide cover. The amount you are reimbursed depends on your Hospitalia plan:
- Do you have Hospitalia Smart?
Then you will receive optimal reimbursement if you stay in a shared room during the first 50 days of the hospital admission. In a private room, you receive reimbursement of medical fee supplements up to a maximum of 1 times the statutory tariff (=100%) and up to 100 euros per admission day for room supplements. - Do you have Hospitalia Care?
Then you receive reimbursement of medical fee supplements up to 2 times the statutory tariff (200%) and up to 125 euros per admission day for room supplements. - Do you have Hospitalia Plus?
Then you receive reimbursement of medical fee supplements up to 3 times the statutory tariff (300%) and up to 125 euros per admission day for room supplements.
Please note:
- If your insurance limits reimbursements due to a pre-existing condition and your admission is related to it, your insurance will not reimburse the supplements for a private room.
Rehabilitation at home
Were you admitted to the diagnostic medicine or surgical department in hospital and do you need further care at home? This is referred to as post-hospital care. The medical costs for your rehabilitation at home are reimbursed for a certain period. Thanks to Hospitalia Smart, Hospitalia Care and Hospitalia Plus, 4 months of post-hospital care are covered.
The reimbursement of medical costs includes:
- Co-payments for consultations with general practitioners and specialists.
- Medication covered by the statutory health insurance.
- Physiotherapy after the admission: 20 sessions within 90 days with Hospitalia Smart, and 45 sessions within 180 days with Hospitalia Care and Hospitalia Plus.
Please note: post-hospital care is not reimbursed after discharge from a rehabilitation department or rehabilitation hospital.
Reimbursement for pre- and post-treatment care
Your Hospitalia Smart, Hospitalia Care and Hospitalia Plus hospitalisation insurance does not cover pre- and post-hospital care.
Exception: if the rehabilitation is preceded by an admission to the same hospital, this may be possible. Please contact us for more information.
Reimbursement for residential care or short stay care
Are you not yet fully self-sufficient enough to return home? Then it is possible to temporarily stay in a care residence or a short stay facility. The reimbursement of your stay depends on your Hospitalia plan:
- Do you have Hospitalia Smart? You receive a fixed allowance of €7.50 per day for each temporary stay in a recovery hotel or care hotel.
- Do you have Hospitalia Care or Hospitalia Plus? You receive a fixed allowance of €15 per day for each temporary stay in a recovery hotel or care hotel.
The reimbursement is granted if the stay started within 14 days after leaving the hospital. It remains limited to 15 days per calendar year.

How do I apply for my reimbursement
If you are insured with a Helan hospitalisation insurance plan, follow the steps below to request your reimbursement.
Are you insured with another hospitalisation insurance provider? Please contact your broker to find out how the reimbursement process works.
When you receive your invoices, you first pay the amount yourself. You will be reimbursed later.
Download a recent reimbursement form. Fill it in, sign it, and attach the hospital admission invoice and any other supporting documents.
Place a white adhesive stamp on documents that you do not submit digitally so that we can identify them immediately.
- Submit your documents digitally via the My Helan App or via My Helan Web.
- Or deposit them in a Helan mailbox near you.
- Or send them by post to Helan Independent Health Insurance Fund, Boomsesteenweg 5, 2610 Wilrijk.
Please note! A certificate of care provided (paper doctor’s note) may not be submitted digitally. We require the original for reimbursement by the statutory health insurance.
