Emergency admission

As a health insurance fund, we support you not only in routine care, but also in unexpected medical situations such as an emergency admission. An emergency admission can be stressful, which is why we have gathered all the necessary information you need here.

Arrival at the emergency room

When you arrive at the emergency room of the nearest hospital, you need to register. Always describe your symptoms as clearly and completely as possible so that the emergency staff can help you in the best possible way. Also mention any allergies or pregnancy.

Is the situation urgent? Then the administrative formalities will be handled later by a member of the emergency department staff.

What happens during your emergency admission

The way your emergency admission proceeds depends entirely on each individual situation. In less urgent cases, you will be asked to take a seat in the waiting room again and will be called in for examinations and any necessary treatment. In urgent cases, treatment will start immediately.

After your emergency admission

Depending on your medical condition and the required treatments, there are several possibilities after your emergency admission:

  • You are further admitted to the hospital in a hospitalisation ward.
  • You can go home and, if necessary, will be followed up by your GP, home nurse, or other care providers.
  • You are transferred to another hospital or facility to ensure the most appropriate care or follow-up care.

Reimbursement for emergency admission

Whether your emergency admission is reimbursed depends on your specific situation.

  • Are you not admitted to hospital after your emergency admission? Then a co-payment is charged. If you were referred to the emergency department by a GP or transported by emergency services (112), you pay less co-payment than if you went to the emergency department on your own initiative.
  • Are you admitted to hospital after your emergency admission? Then your emergency admission may be eligible for reimbursement via pre- and post-hospitalisation care.

Unable to work?

Will you be unable to work for a longer period? Then inform not only your employer, but also your health insurance fund. You will start a disability file, and the health insurance fund will, if necessary, pay your sickness benefit.
