When do you need to join a health insurance fund?

The moment when you need to join a health insurance fund yourself depends on your situation:
Congratulations on your first job! Register in your own name with Helan Health Insurance.
Have you just started working as a self-employed person? Congratulations!
- Register in your own name with Helan Health Insurance
- Please also provide a certificate of your first paid social security contributions. You can do this digitally via My Helan, through a Helan letterbox or by post to Helan Health Insurance, Boomsesteenweg 5, 2610 Wilrijk.
Find out more about self-employed status here.
- In the year you turn 26, you can remain registered as a dependent on your parents’ health insurance fund until 31 December.

Vragen of advies nodig?
If you have medical expenses for care from a GP, physiotherapist or dentist, the statutory health insurance determines how much you are reimbursed. The health insurance fund takes care of that for you. At Helan Health Insurance, we process your medical certificates and reimburse the statutory amount. In My Helan, your online health insurance, you can easily keep track of everything. You can do this on your computer or, even more conveniently, on your smartphone via the app.
Are you ill or has something happened that prevents you from working for a while? Or have you just given birth? We arrange a replacement income or benefit for you, until you can return to work. You can easily apply for your benefit digitally via My Helan and follow up your file there as well.
We handle the reimbursements set by law. But if you want to stay healthy and balanced, you deserve that little bit extra. That’s why, as a Helan customer, you also benefit from a range of additional benefits and reimbursements.
If you are joining in your own name for the first time, there is no waiting period and you can start enjoying the benefits of Helan Health Insurance straight away.
Are you already affiliated with another health insurance fund and want to switch to Helan Health Insurance? You can decide to change at any time. However, by law your affiliation can only start at the beginning of a new quarter: 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October.
Your registration must be completed no later than the fifth day of the month preceding the new quarter. For example, if you want to switch on 1 April, we must receive your registration by 5 March at the latest.
- Reimbursements through the statutory health insurance are largely processed automatically and settled as soon as your doctor submits the consultation.
- Did your doctor charge you part of the cost that you can reclaim from another insurance? You can easily track how much you’ll be reimbursed and when to expect payment via My Helan (app or web), your online health insurance.
Our advisers are happy to go through the options for your personal situation with you.
Have you graduated or stopped your studies early? As a school leaver, you are still entitled to the Groeipakket for twelve months. For more information, contact a payment provider, such as My Family.
