Fall prevention

Falls are best avoided. Especially as you get older, it saves you a lot of trouble. How can you reduce your risk of falling? And why does that matter so much for your physical and mental health? Helan is here with advice and practical help.

What is fall prevention?

Fall prevention reduces your risk of falling. That matters for young and old alike. Nobody likes to end up on the floor unexpectedly, because a fall can have unpleasant consequences. And the more years on the clock, the more brittle your bones and the greater your chance of a serious fracture after a fall.

Did you know that one in three people over 65 falls at least once a year? And that the fear of falling makes many people less active, when staying active is exactly what matters most?

Together, we can take a step towards better. With the right guidelines, aids and measures, you can create a safe home environment and improve your quality of life.

Fall prevention tips

How can you prevent falls in older people? These seven tips give you something to hold on to:

1. Stay active

Regular exercise is the best remedy against falls. Walking, gardening, playing with your grandchildren: those small daily moments of movement make a big difference. You do not have to take up intensive sport to stay in shape. Take your time, avoid sudden movements and use extra support where you need it. Every step counts. Your GP can refer you to a physiotherapist or a coach (via Bewegen Op Verwijzing) for exercises.

2. Live healthily

Make sure you get enough vitamin D and calcium. They strengthen your bones and muscles. You get vitamin D from the sun and from fresh air outdoors. You will find calcium in fish and broccoli, for example. And as always: water keeps you fitter than alcohol. The occasional glass of wine is fine, but leave it at that.

3. Be careful with medication

Certain medicines, especially sleeping tablets, can affect your balance. Discuss your medication thoroughly with your doctor and report any side effects in good time. It is better not to experiment on your own, so always take your medication as prescribed.

4. Take measures around the house

Make your home fall-free. Keep every walkway clear and avoid rugs. Store your things tidily and put non-slip mats on smooth floors and in the shower. A shower stool and grab rails help too. Small steps can be very unsafe. Getting up is often a challenge, so check that your toilet, sofas and chairs are high enough. More tips for a fall-free home?

5. Look after your eyes

Have your eyes checked regularly, so you can see what you are doing. Make sure your home is well lit. Do you wear glasses? Put them on and always keep them within reach, at night as well.

6. Look after your feet

Do not walk around in socks and avoid heels. You stand more firmly in shoes that support your feet properly. Or in slippers with a good grip. You might consider buying care slippers. Do you have foot problems? Tackle them together with your doctor, podiatrist or foot care specialist.

7. Make your home fall-safe with the Helan Healthcare Shop

Fit a grab rail, put down a non-slip mat, or choose a grabber. The Helan Healthcare Shop helps you set up your home safely.
