What if you do not pay your health insurance fund contribution?

If you are affiliated to a health insurance fund as a policyholder, you also have to pay a health insurance fund contribution for membership of the benefits scheme. If you do not pay, you may lose the benefits or even be excluded from joining again. So keep a close eye on your health insurance fund contribution.

Risks of falling behind with payments

Since 1 January 2012, joining a health insurance fund as an entitled person has also meant compulsory membership of that fund's benefits scheme. You are then obliged to pay the health insurance fund contribution in order to enjoy the benefits.

If you fail to pay your health insurance fund contribution for 24 months, despite several reminders:

  • You can no longer enjoy the benefits, at least until the arrears have been cleared.
  • The VMOB Insurance health insurance policies, namely Hospitalia, Dentalia Plus and/or Medicalia, that you may have taken out via Helan for yourself or for a dependant will be terminated. You can take out a new contract once the period for restoring your entitlement (24 months) has started, provided that you pay regularly and correctly. If you fall behind again for 6 months, your contract will be terminated once more.

You will find the details of the rules on payment arrears in our articles of association, under Chapter II, "Admission, resignation, removal and exclusion of members". These rules apply whichever health insurance fund you join after non-payment, and also if you were affiliated to several health insurance funds during the period of non-payment.

Deferral due to COVID-19

These rules apply from 1 January 2019, which means the first exclusions (24 months later) would have taken place on 1 January 2021. Because of the coronavirus crisis, however, a deferral was granted for the application of these rules. This means that the first exclusions only take place on 1 January 2022, and therefore not on 1 January 2021.

Good to know

Do you need to take out a new insurance contract with MLOZ INSURANCE after a termination for non-payment? Then the conditions for all new contracts apply, not the conditions of your original contract. Think of age, deductible or rate.
