Diabetes: what are the symptoms?

Diabetes is commonly referred to as “sugar disease.” It is a chronic condition in which elevated blood glucose levels play a central role. But how do you know if you have diabetes? What are the symptoms? And what is the difference between type 1 and type 2? We provide answers to all these questions.

What is the difference between the types of diabetes?

Diabetes is caused when the pancreas produces little or no insulin, or when the insulin produced does not work effectively. It is important to know that there are two types of diabetes:

Type 1

When the body no longer produces insulin, you have type 1 diabetes. This condition develops early, and the diagnosis is usually made in people under 40. However, it can also be diagnosed later in life. It is an autoimmune disease, meaning that the immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

Type 2

When the body no longer properly absorbs insulin at the cellular level and insulin production decreases over time, it is referred to as type 2 diabetes. The development of this type is partly linked to genetic factors and age. Lifestyle also plays an important role: how healthy you eat, whether you exercise enough, and whether you are overweight. This form of diabetes is often called adult-onset diabetes, as it mainly affects people over the age of 40.

Which symptoms indicate type 1 and type 2 diabetes?

Unlike type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes does not always present clear or typical symptoms. Due to its gradual development, type 2 diabetes is often detected years too late. It is estimated that about 1 in 3 people with type 2 diabetes are unaware they have it. Although the following symptoms can also occur in other situations, they should raise concern:

  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst and dry mouth
  • Unexplained fatigue
  • Significant weight loss despite a normal appetite
  • Slow-healing wounds
  • Reduced vision
  • Cramps, tingling, or pain in the feet or legs
  • Recurring fungal infections of the vagina or penis
  • Recurring bladder infections

Also remember that many people with type 2 diabetes show little or no symptoms for years. That is why it is recommended to consult a doctor in time. A blood test can determine whether you have diabetes. You can also calculate your risk of developing type 2 diabetes over the next 10 years via the University Hospital of Leuven. If you have an increased risk of type 2 diabetes or experience the symptoms mentioned above, consult your general practitioner. A simple fasting blood test can check whether your blood sugar levels are elevated.

How do you live with diabetes?

Being diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes can have a significant impact. However, diabetes does not have to prevent you from enjoying life. With regular care, it is entirely possible to lead a normal life. While diabetes cannot be cured, many symptoms can be managed or reduced.

  • Alternate sufficiently between sitting, standing, and more intensive physical activity. You can find detailed guidance in the physical activity triangle from the Flemish Institute for Healthy Living.
  • Omega 3: Fish contains a lot of omega-3 fatty acids. It is important to maintain a ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats of 5:1, while in many Western diets this ratio is closer to 20:1.
  • Eat plenty of vegetables.
  • Include foods from each layer of the food triangle in each meal and respect the recommended proportions.
  • Limit salt intake and reduce the use of fats, especially saturated fats.

In addition to these tips, drink enough water, spend time outdoors, try to reduce stress, and ensure a good night's sleep. This can help prevent diabetes or keep it under control. Need more tips? Take care of yourself as a diabetes patient.
