Statutory reimbursement: gastric band
The statutory health insurance provides a reimbursement for people undergoing a bariatric procedure (gastric band). The amount you will be reimbursed depends on:
- the procedure
- the materials used
- the additional costs associated with such a procedure.

- Your BMI must be greater than or equal to 40. For a patient with proven diabetes, it must be greater than or equal to 35.
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You must have followed a documented diet treatment for at least 1 year without lasting success.
- You must undergo a multidisciplinary bariatric consultation with:
- a specialist in surgery AND
- a specialist in internal medicine AND
- a specialist in psychiatry or a clinical psychologist
Statutory reimbursement: care program for children with obesity
The range of reimbursed care program without personal contribution has been extended to children and young people aged 2 to 17 with obesity. Following a personalized care pathway together with a treating physician and a team of professional healthcare providers increases the chances of better treatment and reduces the risk of relapse.

- The child is between 2 and 17 years old.
- The child’s BMI is greater than or equal to the 95th percentile, as determined by the referring physician.
- The child follows a care pathway of 10 sessions over 2 years with a dietitian.
- Or the child follows a multi-year multidisciplinary care pathway in a specialized pediatric obesity center (PMOC) in Belgium, in consultation with the treating physician.
Helan-benefit: €200 for a support program
As a member of Helan Health Insurance Fund, you are entitled to a one-time reimbursement of 200 euros for guidance programs followed in a hospital or in multidisciplinary centers recognized by the health insurance fund: Zeepreventorium De Haan, Program Go4Fit (VCLB Deinze), Be4balance, and Movimento.

Download the form obesity and have it completed by your doctor.
Send the completed form to Helan.
Provide us with the reimbursement form, or the form from the hospital or multidisciplinary center that proves you are participating in a guidance program:
- Digitally: with the My Helan app (mobile) or via My Helan (desktop). An adhesive stamp is not needed, we identify your document through your login.
- By post to Helan Independent Health Insurance Fund, Boomsesteenweg 5 in 2610 Wilrijk, with a white adhesive stamp. Or drop it off in a Helan mailbox in your neighborhood.
We will transfer the amount to your bank account.
- You are in order with your health insurance contributions.
- For adults aged 18 and over: BMI of 30 or higher.
- For children and adolescents up to and including 17 years: BMI at or above the 95th percentile or a percentage BMI of 140% or higher.
Helan offer: €25 reimbursement for a visit to a dietitian
Every year, you get 25 euros reimbursed for consultations with a dietitian.
