Urgent care abroad

What if you fall ill or something happens to you whilst abroad? You can count on assistance and reimbursement.

Reimbursement of medical costs

Are you travelling abroad and have medical expenses? What is the next step? Submit a digital file for medical care via My Helan and provide us with the original paper invoice at one of our offices or by post.

Please note: This mainly applies to countries within the EEA. Are you travelling to a country outside the EEA?

  • Enter the name of the country in our search function. If there is reimbursement, you will receive the necessary information. 
  • If the country you entered shows no information, feel free to contact us.

Do you have a hospital admission of at least one overnight stay?

Call Mediphone Assist within 48 hours of hospital admission. After approval by Mediphone Assist, Helan Health Insurance Fund members can receive unlimited reimbursement for:

  • hospital admission 
  • repatriation
  • transport costs for the patient (e.g. from the scene of an accident to a foreign hospital)
  • outpatient medical costs due to a winter sports accident

Do you need oxygen therapy, dialysis, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy? Contact Mediphone Assist one month before the treatment. This helps prevent high costs.

For the following care, you may receive a limited reimbursement:

  • other urgent outpatient costs than winter sports accidents
  • transport costs abroad for the patient in case of dialysis, oxygen therapy, or chemotherapy: maximum €100 per month
  • travel costs from Belgium to abroad for a relative: maximum €500
  • accommodation costs for a relative: maximum €100 per day for a maximum of 10 days
  • the first phone contact with the emergency centre: maximum €15
  • medicines prescribed by a foreign doctor and purchased abroad
  • medicines prescribed by a Belgian doctor and purchased abroad: only for medication that is also reimbursable in Belgium and in case of urgency

If your health insurance contributions are not paid, you cannot make use of Mediphone Assist or the reimbursement of urgent medical care abroad.

Depending on your situation, download the reimbursement form:

Collect all original, paid invoices, and other medical documents and reports. Attach a white adhesive stamp of the patient to the documents.

Did you receive your invoices by email? Then send us a copy. Make sure to also keep a copy of all documents for yourself.

Please send us your reimbursement form with the required supporting documents by post to Helan Health Insurance Fund, Boomsesteenweg 5 in 2610 Wilrijk, including a white adhesive stamp. Or drop it in a Helan mailbox in your area.

  • Before departure, you must be in order with your health insurance contributions.
  • Medical invoices must be paid first. So make sure to include proof of payment with your invoices.
  • Only for urgent and necessary medical expenses during a stay in Albania, Algeria, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Hebrides, Israel, Jordan, Channel Islands (Alderney, Guernsey, Herm, Jersey, Sark), Kosovo, Lebanon, Libya, North Macedonia, Isle of Man, Morocco, Monaco, Montenegro, Orkney Islands, Palestine, San Marino, Scilly Isles, Serbia, Shetland Islands, Syria, Türkiye, Tunisia, Vatican City, United Kingdom, Isle of Wight, Switzerland, and all countries of the European Economic Area (EEA): Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Hungary, Croatia, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Czech Republic, and Sweden.
  • Medical costs resulting from sports or other high-risk activities are excluded.
  • Consult the statutes for more information.
