The Importance of Dental Check-ups
No one goes to the dentist for fun, but with annual visits, you can save yourself from many problems. It’s good for your health, and when you visit the dentist annually, you also get more reimbursed.
How Do You Find a Good Dentist?
Ask family, friends, or colleagues which dentist they go to and what their experiences are. Inquire about their way of working, the consultation hours, the rates (is the dentist contracted or not), any specializations, whether they are accepting new patients, and so on. For more information, you can also check with your general practitioner or visit professional associations for dentists.
Why an Annual Dental Visit?
Prevention is still better than cure. A dentist is not only there to fix damage but primarily to prevent tooth decay and issues with your teeth. That's why it's recommended from the age of 2 to visit the dentist every 6 months for a preventive check-up. The dentist can adjust the frequency based on the condition of your teeth.
If you want to be optimally reimbursed by the statutory health insurance, and by your supplementary dental insurance, it’s important to go for annual dental check-ups. Both the statutory health insurance and Dentalia Up dental insurance reward good prevention with maximum reimbursements.

What Information Should You Provide to Your Dentist?
To treat you optimally, your dentist needs certain information.
- Do you have a toothache? Describe as clearly as possible what you feel. Make a list of the symptoms. Fever, bad breath, headaches, bleeding gums, ...
- Mention everything that deviates from your normal health condition, even if you think it’s unrelated to your tooth pain. Your dentist, as a professional healthcare provider, may sometimes make medical connections.
- Dental care can cause issues when combined with certain medications. That’s why it’s important to tell your dentist which products or medications you use, such as aspirin, blood thinners, ...
- Your dentist will ask you some questions about your medical history and any surgeries you’ve had in the past. Be sure to inform them if you are diabetic, pregnant, or allergic to certain substances. Also, let your dentist know if your health condition changes. Everything you share is confidential.
