What Is Supplementary Dental Insurance?
Supplementary dental insurance is a policy you take out on top of the compulsory health insurance. While the statutory health insurance only covers part of your dental costs and is often limited to essential treatments such as check-ups and fillings, supplementary dental insurance provides cover for a broader range of oral care treatments.
This includes costs for orthodontics, implants, bridges, crowns and periodontology that would otherwise be entirely at your own expense. With additional dental insurance, you protect yourself and your family against high dental care costs.

When Do You Need Supplementary Dental Insurance?
You may need supplementary dental insurance if you want greater certainty about your oral care costs or if you have specific dental needs. If you regularly visit the dentist for more than a routine check-up, or if you expect to need more extensive treatment in the future, taking out additional dental insurance is a smart choice.
It can also be particularly valuable for families with children who may need orthodontic treatment, or for seniors who are more likely to face complex dental issues. This type of insurance can ease financial pressure and ensure you always have access to the best possible care.
Why Take Out Supplementary Dental Insurance?
The costs of dental corrections can quickly add up. If you need to wear braces, the bill can easily reach €3,700. For bridges, dentures and crowns, the average cost is around €1,600. Another reason for these high costs is that around 40% of dentists in Flanders and 80% of orthodontists are non-contracted and therefore charge additional fees, which are not reimbursed by the statutory health insurance.
With supplementary dental insurance, you are well protected against the costs of dental corrections. The dental insurance Dentalia Up reimburses up to €4,000 per year:
- 100% for preventive dental care, such as oral examinations, fissure sealing, gum checks, etc.
- Up to 80% for curative dental care, such as filling cavities, tooth extractions and dental radiology.
- Up to 80% for dentures, implants and periodontology.
- 60% for early and standard orthodontics for children and young people.
- 100% for unforeseen dental costs in the event of an accident or cancer.
For preventive dental care and unforeseen dental costs due to an accident or cancer treatment, you can count on reimbursement immediately, so there is no waiting period. A waiting period does apply to orthodontics, curative dental care, dentures, implants and periodontology. So make sure you join in good time to benefit from optimal cover.
Supplementary Dental Insurance for the Whole Family
Especially for families with children, supplementary dental insurance is a smart choice. Most children need regular dental care. Think of cavities, a dental accident, or braces, for example.
Dentalia Up is a family insurance policy: you as a parent and the children who depend on you join together. Did you know that the supplementary dental insurance Dentalia Up is free for children up to the age of 3? If you join before your child turns 5, your child benefits from the maximum reimbursement. That’s why we recommend parents of young children to join Dentalia Up early. This way, you’re fully prepared for cavities, little accidents and braces.
How Does Dentalia Up Work?
You pay a monthly contribution, depending on your age. In return, you receive reimbursement up to a maximum annual or two-yearly amount. This amount, also known as the reimbursement ceiling, gradually increases during the first few years.
You can join the supplementary dental insurance Dentalia Up up to the age of 64. The condition is that you are a Helan member and that your health insurance contributions are up to date.
