Before your hospital admission
Do you have a planned hospital admission? Then you’ll want to be well prepared! From room choice to reporting incapacity for work or getting a clear overview of the costs: find out here what you need to consider before going to hospital.
Who should you inform about your admission?
Check who you need to inform about your hospital admission in advance. This will help you avoid stress after you’ve been admitted.
If necessary, inform your insurance provider:
- Are you affiliated with Hospitalia Smart (formerly Hospitalia), Hospitalia Care (formerly Hospitalia Medium) or Hospitalia Plus (unchanged)? You don’t need to do anything in advance.
- Are you insured with an external insurance company? Check with your broker whether you need to declare your hospital admission or not.
You do not need to inform the health insurance fund in advance of your admission. Would you like advice about reimbursement from your health insurance fund or your Hospitalia Smart, Hospitalia Care or Hospitalia Plus insurance? Check the coverage online or contact us for advice.
If you are unable to work for a while after your hospital stay, make sure to report your incapacity for work to your health insurance fund in time. Be aware of the notification deadlines to avoid a reduction in your sickness benefits.
Are you unable to work for a while after your hospital stay? Make sure to inform your health insurance fund as well as your employer in time, and submit your medical certificate.
What should you take with you to the hospital?
When you are admitted to the hospital, it is important for your own comfort to bring the right items. Below we list the most common things for you.
Would you like to bring something specific, or are you unsure whether everything will be provided in your room? Please contact the hospital where you will be admitted.
Please take the following items with you to the hospital:
- Your identity card or ISI+ card
- Any insurance card or proof of insurance (if you are insured with Helan, you do not need to bring this)
- A list of any medication you are currently taking
- Your blood type card
- If you expect to be unable to work for an extended period after your hospital stay, it is advisable to also bring a certificate of incapacity for work to be completed by your treating physician.
To make your stay as comfortable as possible, it is also a good idea to bring the following personal items:
- Toiletries
- Comfortable clothing
- Medication
- Cash or your payment card (for any personal expenses or a deposit)
- Something to keep you occupied (books, magazines, laptop, mobile phone, etc.)
Which room can you choose?
For a planned admission, you can choose between a single room or a shared room. This choice determines the cost on your hospital bill. In a single room, hospitals may charge additional room and physician supplements. In a shared room, these costs are not charged. Make sure to check in advance whether a single room is included in your hospital insurance. If it is not, we recommend choosing a shared room to avoid high costs on your bill.
How much will my admission cost?
The cost of your hospital stay depends on two factors: the type of admission and the hospital where the admission takes place. Would you like an estimate of what your hospital stay will cost in advance? With our handy tool, you can immediately see the average price of most surgical procedures in different hospitals.
Want to be sure? Then feel free to contact the hospital where your admission will take place.
I have to pay a deposit
For certain procedures, the hospital may request a deposit. This deposit must be paid to the hospital before admission. Your hospital insurance may reimburse this deposit in advance of your admission. It is important that a hospital stay subsequently takes place and is also declared to the insurance. Otherwise, this deposit will be reclaimed.
What is covered by your hospitalisation insurance?
A hospital insurance covers costs incurred during a hospital admission. However, which costs are reimbursed depends on the specific insurance you are affiliated with. Each policy has its own terms and rates. Make sure to inform yourself in advance with your insurer and ask which room choice and costs are covered before confirming your room with the hospital.
