How much do braces for your teeth cost?
A visit to the orthodontist comes with a lot of questions. What is the price of braces for your teeth? Why do you need them? Thanks to this helpful questionnaire, you'll know exactly what to ask your dentist.
How much do braces cost and other questions to ask
How much do braces cost? That's one of the 5 questions to ask your orthodontist. Go over the questions below before you visit your orthodontist. This way, you will be well prepared.
1. What is the cost of braces?
An orthodontic treatment is not cheap. The average cost for all materials, check-ups, and treatments quickly adds up to €3,700. It's best to inquire beforehand about the exact cost of your braces, so you're not caught by surprise.
Be sure to check with your health insurance about what will be reimbursed and what will not. Up to the age of 22, Helan offers reimbursement for orthodontics, through the statutory health insurance.
Note: Make sure that the orthodontic treatment starts before the 15th birthday. Otherwise, you will miss out on the reimbursements through the statutory health insurance. Another important thing to know is that there may be a difference in reimbursement depending on whether you go to a contracted or non-contracted dentist.
If you are a Helan customer and also enrolled in the dental insurance Dentalia Up, you can expect additional reimbursement on top of the statutory health insurance. Read here why dental insurance is a good idea and what you get in return.
2. What is the problem?
It is important to understand exactly what the problem is with your teeth. This way, you will know what to pay attention to and what to do to take good care of your teeth.
3. When do I need to come in for a check-up?
A brace requires regular follow-ups. Be sure to make a next appointment to check if everything is progressing well. It’s better to have too many check-ups than too few. Ask in advance how many check-ups you'll need so you can plan ahead.
4. How will my teeth look with or without orthodontic treatment?
Is the procedure necessary? Or should you wait a little longer? Always ask if the treatment is necessary and what would happen if it doesn’t take place. Also, ask about the expected results of the treatment. If you're still uncertain, it’s advisable to get a second opinion.
5. How long do I need to wear braces?
The duration of the treatment depends on several factors, such as the severity of the problem, body growth, and how motivated you are to cooperate well. An early orthodontic treatment usually lasts from six months to a year. Standard orthodontics with braces typically lasts around one and a half years.
You can also find information on the Federation of Flemish Dentists website about the average treatment duration. However, keep in mind that there is no definitive answer, as every situation is different.

Will I get more reimbursed with dental insurance?
If you are insured with the dental insurance Dentalia Up, you will get up to €2,200 per treatment reimbursed, on top of the reimbursements from the statutory health insurance. This applies to children and teenagers starting treatment before the age of 15. The dental insurance covers 60% of the costs for braces, if you qualify for reimbursement through the statutory health insurance.
Note: Keep in mind the waiting period. For orthodontics, there is a 12-month waiting period. We recommend that parents of young children enroll early in the dental insurance. This way, you will be optimally insured when your child needs braces. If you enroll your child in the supplementary dental insurance Dentalia Up before their 5th birthday, they will receive the maximum reimbursement. Dental insurance is not mandatory, but it's definitely beneficial for braces, dental accidents, and dental issues.
