Is Dental Insurance Mandatory?

In Belgium, it is mandatory to join a health insurance fund. However, taking out dental insurance is not compulsory. That said, dental insurance does offer many advantages. Read more about it on this page.

What Is Dental Insurance?

Dental insurance is a supplementary policy that provides reimbursements where the statutory health insurance offers insufficient cover. It’s far from a luxury when your child needs braces, when you require a crown or a bridge, when you need a tooth extraction, or when your teeth are unexpectedly damaged due to, for example, an accident or cancer treatment.

That’s why more than a quarter of people in Flanders already choose supplementary dental insurance. On this page, you can see which dental costs are reimbursed by Dentalia Up.

Dental insurance is the most commonly chosen supplementary health insurance. More than a quarter of people in Flanders opt for dental insurance.

Is dental insurance mandatory?

Dental insurance is not mandatory. However, it is wise to take out a policy. This way, you are protected against dental costs that are not covered by social security. For example:

What Are the Benefits of Dental Insurance?

The costs of dental corrections can quickly add up. If your child needs braces, the bill can easily reach €3,700. For bridges, dentures and crowns, the average cost is around €1,600. Another reason for these high costs is that around 40% of dentists in Flanders and 80% of orthodontists are non-contracted and therefore charge additional fees, which are not reimbursed by the statutory health insurance.

If you have dental insurance, you are well covered against the costs of dental corrections. The dental insurance Dentalia Up reimburses up to €4,000 per year.

An Example...

Suppose a child needs braces and the parents choose a non-contracted orthodontist. The total cost amounts to €2,500. The statutory health insurance reimburses €950 of this amount. Without supplementary insurance, €1,550 would have to be paid out of pocket. Fortunately, Dentalia Up provides a reimbursement of €930 in the third year of membership. This means the remaining out-of-pocket cost for the treatment is €620.
