How much does a crown or bridge cost?
Both crowns and bridges are fixed prostheses: they are attached to existing teeth, molars or implants. A crown or bridge is a good solution if you lose or break a tooth. Unfortunately, crowns and bridges are not cheap. The good news is that the additional Dental insurance Dentalia Up reimburses up to €2,200 every 2 years for the cost of dental prostheses. Read on to find out more about crowns, bridges, their cost and reimbursement.
What is the difference between a crown and a bridge?
A crown is a dental prosthesis placed over a tooth, molar or implant. In addition to full crowns, there are also partial crowns, where only the chewing surface is covered.
A bridge is used to replace a missing tooth or molar. It ‘bridges’ the empty space where the tooth is missing. A bridge can consist of several crowns joined together if multiple adjacent teeth need to be replaced.
When do you need a crown or a bridge?
If a tooth or molar has had lots of fillings, or if too little of a molar remains after it has broken to place a new filling securely, a crown may be made. A crown can help you keep a broken tooth or molar. You might also choose a crown if, for example, you’re bothered by discolouration or an unusual shape of a tooth. If you are missing an entire tooth or molar, you can have an implant or artificial root placed, on which a crown is then fitted.
If you are missing one or more molars, a bridge can help you chew more comfortably. A bridge can also prevent the teeth or molars next to the gap from shifting out of position. A bridge may also be chosen if the missing tooth (or teeth) affects the look of your smile.
How much do a bridge and a crown cost?
The cost of a crown or bridge depends on what treatment you need and which healthcare provider carries it out. Many specialists are non-contracted and may charge additional supplements.
It’s therefore not easy to put an exact price on it, but you can expect to pay around €600 for a crown. If you also need an implant or artificial root because your tooth or molar is missing, the total cost can quickly rise to around €2,000.
A bridge is usually more expensive, as it generally consists of several crowns. You can expect to pay between €1,500 and €2,000, depending on how many teeth need to be replaced.
Are the costs of crowns and bridges reimbursed?
A fixed dental prosthesis such as a crown or bridge is not reimbursed by the statutory health insurance.
If you are covered by the additional Dental insurance Dentalia Up, you will receive 50% or 80% reimbursement for crowns, bridges and implants, depending on your preventive behaviour. So make sure to schedule a yearly check-up with your dentist to benefit from the highest reimbursement.
What if I need an implant, crown or bridge due to an accident?
If your teeth are damaged in an accident, the Dental insurance Dentalia Up reimburses your dental care costs 100%, up to €4,000 per person. And because accidents are always unexpected, Dentalia Up waives the waiting period. This means your teeth are insured from the moment you join in the event of an accident. Dental damage following cancer treatment is also reimbursed at 100%, up to €4,000 per person.
