Dental insurance for cancer patients
Cancer often comes without warning and has a profound impact on your life. Treatment doesn’t only affect cancer cells, but can also damage your teeth. The cost of restorative dental care can be high and isn’t always fully covered by the statutory health insurance. That’s why the Dental insurance Dentalia Up offers extra support for dental care for cancer patients.
Cancer and dental problems: what you need to know
Chemotherapy has a major impact on the body. Your teeth can also be affected by the treatment. For some cancer patients, the damage to their teeth remains limited. But in other cases, the cost of restorative treatment can quickly add up.
Fortunately, in these situations you may be able to rely on government support measures. Patients who are severely affected may qualify for full reimbursement of their dental care.
Are you entitled to full reimbursement as a cancer patient? Then your dentist must register costly treatments such as dental bridges and crowns, dental implants and dentures via the third-party payment system. This means the government pays the cost of your dental care directly to your dentist, even if you visit a non-contracted dentist. Read all about it on this page.
Dental problems caused by chemotherapy
Chemotherapy has a major impact on the body. Your teeth can also be affected by the treatment. For some cancer patients, the damage to their teeth remains limited. But in other cases, the cost of restorative treatment can quickly add up. People with head or neck tumours, for example, are often faced with damage to the upper or lower jaw during their recovery process. Unfortunately, this type of damage cannot be resolved with just a few visits to the dentist.
Fortunately, in these situations you may be able to rely on government support measures. Patients who are severely affected may qualify for full reimbursement of their dental care.
Reimbursement after a cancer diagnosis
There are three groups of patients who can apply for full reimbursement of restorative dental care. These include:
- Patients with severe damage to the jawbone as a result of a tumour or radiotherapy.
- Patients who suffer from tooth loss or severe dental abnormalities following a negative reaction to stem cell therapy.
- Patients under the age of twelve who have experienced tooth loss or serious dental abnormalities after chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
It’s best to check with your dentist whether you qualify for reimbursement.
