What is the cost of a dental prosthesis?

The cost of a dental prosthesis can vary considerably and depends on several factors, such as the type of prosthesis, the material used and the complexity of the treatment. For example, you can expect to pay around €750 for a crown. If an implant is required, the cost can rise to €2,000 or more per implant.

It is important to know that these prices may be significantly higher if you choose a non-contracted specialist, as they are not bound by official fee agreements. That is why it’s essential to check the expected cost of a dental prosthesis with your dentist in advance. An additional Dental insurance can help reduce these high costs.

Is a dental prosthesis reimbursed?

Dental prostheses are not cheap. The statutory health insurance provides limited reimbursement in certain situations. If you want to be well protected against the cost of dental prostheses, you can join Dentalia Up, the dental insurance offered by Helan. This insurance reimburses the cost of prostheses and implants up to 2,200 euros every 2 years.

Please note: the earlier you join, the more advantageous your contribution. Also take the waiting period into account. For prostheses and implants, a waiting period of 12 months applies. If you lose teeth due to an accident, the waiting period does not apply and you will be reimbursed immediately by Dentalia Up.

What types of dental prostheses are there?

There are different types of dental prostheses. The right option depends on your remaining teeth and whether you have dental implants. There are fixed and removable prostheses. The cost of a dental prosthesis varies significantly depending on the type and materials used, so it’s always wise to get clear information in advance.

Fixed dental prostheses

  • Crown: a dental prosthesis placed over an existing tooth or on a dental implant.
  • Bridge: a structure that bridges the gap between your teeth to replace one or two missing teeth.

Removable dental prostheses

  • Plate denture: artificial teeth mounted on an acrylic base.
  • Metal framework denture: teeth mounted on a metal framework. This type is more compact, stronger and more comfortable.
  • Overdenture: the prosthesis is supported by two or more of your own teeth or implants, which are covered with a metal crown to provide extra stability.

Ask your dentist which dental prosthesis suits you best and discuss the associated cost. Together, you can find the solution that works best for you.

What is a dental prosthesis and a dental implant?

A dental prosthesis is a general term for solutions that replace missing teeth, ranging from a full set of dentures to a crown or bridge. A dental implant is a type of artificial root made of titanium. The implant is surgically placed into the jawbone. After four to six months, the dental implant has fully fused with the bone. From that moment on, it can serve as support for a prosthesis. Any missing or extracted tooth can be replaced with a dental implant.

What is a crown and a bridge?

In some cases, no implant is used and a crown or bridge is placed on top of existing teeth instead. A hollow artificial tooth or several artificial teeth are fitted over the natural teeth. To do this, the existing teeth need to be reshaped.

What is a post crown?

A post crown consists of a small post with a dental crown attached to it. The post is placed into the root canal. Dentists use a post crown when the tooth root is still healthy enough, but the tooth itself is broken or damaged. The difference compared to a dental implant is that your natural tooth root is preserved.

Who places a dental prosthesis?

Dental implants or dental prostheses are almost always placed by a specialist: a periodontist, an oral surgeon or a dentist with specific training in this field.
