Medical approval for coeliac disease or dermatitis herpetiformis
If you have coeliac disease (gluten intolerance) or dermatitis herpetiformis, you may be entitled to a reimbursement of 38 euros per month for special food products for home use through the compulsory health insurance. To receive this reimbursement, you must obtain medical approval from the advising physician of your health insurance fund.
Conditions
- The medical nutrition is exclusively for home use.
- You suffer from coeliac disease, a gluten intolerance that causes poor absorption of gluten in the intestines, or from dermatitis herpetiformis, a chronic condition related to coeliac disease that affects the skin and the small intestine.

How does the application work?
Your treating specialist doctor completes the application form for your medical approval.
You submit the original application to the advising physician of the health insurance fund:
- Helan office in your neighbourhood.
- Or drop it in a Helan mailbox in your neighbourhood.
- Or send it by post: Helan ziekenfonds, Medical Service – Boomsesteenweg 5, 2610 Wilrijk.
We process your request (administrative check) and forward it to the advising physician (medical check). This may take up to 3 weeks. Through the My Helan app (mobile) or via My Helan (desktop), you can view the current status of your medical approval at any time.
After the advising physician of the health insurance fund has assessed whether you meet the conditions, you will receive an ‘authorisation’ (approval for reimbursement) or a refusal.
The reimbursement
The allowance amounts to 38 euros per calendar month and is paid on a monthly basis.
Extension of the medical approval
If you need to continue your treatment after 24 months, your treating specialist must submit a request to extend the reimbursement. This ensures that you can continue to rely on this financial support for a longer period.
