Medical approval for parenteral nutrition
The compulsory health insurance provides reimbursement for parenteral nutrition for home use. This is energy‑providing nutrition administered directly into the veins. To receive reimbursement, the advising physician of the health insurance fund must grant medical approval.

How does the application work?
Your treating medical specialist completes the application form for your medical approval.
Submit the original application to the advising physician of the health insurance fund:
- Via the Helan office in your neighbourhood.
- Or drop it in a Helan mailbox in your neighbourhood.
- Or send it by post: Helan ziekenfonds, Medische dienst – Boomsesteenweg 5, 2610 Wilrijk.
We process your application (administrative check) and forward it to the advising physician (medical check). This may take up to 3 weeks. Through the My Helan app (mobile) or via My Helan (desktop), you can view the current status of your medical approval at any time.
The advising physician of the health insurance fund reviews your application. If he or she approves the reimbursement, you will receive an ‘authorisation’. If your application is refused, we will also inform you of this.
The reimbursement
Have you received medical approval? Then you don’t need to take any further action to request your reimbursement. The hospital arranges everything directly with your health insurance fund through the third‑party payment scheme.
This concerns a flat-rate reimbursement. The pump and the stand used for administering parenteral nutrition are not included.
