Medical approval for medical nutrition in case of allergy
If you have an allergy to gluten/gliadin or to cereal flour, you may receive a reimbursement of 38 euros per month through the compulsory health insurance for special food products intended for home use. To receive this reimbursement, you must obtain medical approval from the advising physician of your health insurance fund.
Conditions
- The medical nutrition is exclusively for home use.
- You suffer from an allergy to gluten/gliadin or to cereal flour without a gluten allergy.

How does the application work?
Your treating medical specialist completes the application form for your medical approval.
You submit the original application to the advising physician of the health insurance fund:
- Via the Helan office in your neighbourhood.
- Or drop it in a Helan mailbox in your neighbourhood.
- Or send it by post: Helan ziekenfonds, Medical service – Boomsesteenweg 5, 2610 Wilrijk.
We process your application (administrative check) and forward it to the advising physician (medical check). This may take up to 3 weeks. Through the My Helan app (mobile) or via My Helan (desktop), you can view the current status of your medical approval at any time.
The advising physician of the health insurance fund reviews your application. If he or she approves the reimbursement, you will receive an ‘authorisation’. If your application is refused, we will also inform you of this.
Extension of the medical approval
If you need to continue your treatment after 24 months, your treating medical specialist must submit a request to extend the reimbursement. This ensures you can continue to rely on our financial support for a longer period.
The reimbursement
The allowance amounts to 38 euros and is paid per calendar month.
