Medical approval for enteral nutrition
People who cannot take in food orally may require tube feeding or enteral nutrition. In this case, the nutrition is delivered directly into the stomach or intestines. To receive reimbursement through the compulsory health insurance, you need medical approval.

Conditions
- Only for enteral nutrition intended for home use.
- You have a condition listed on the RIZIV list of conditions.
Track the status of your medical approval in My Helan.
How does the application work?
Your treating specialist doctor prepares the reimbursement application on paper.
You submit the original application to the advising physician of the health insurance fund:
- Via the Helan office in your neighbourhood.
- Or drop it in a Helan mailbox in your neighbourhood.
- Or send it by post: Helan ziekenfonds, Medical Service – Boomsesteenweg 5, 2610 Wilrijk.
We process your application (administrative check) and forward it to the advising physician (medical check). This may take up to 3 weeks. Through the My Helan app (mobile) or via My Helan (desktop), you can check the current status of your medical approval at any time.
The advising physician of the health insurance fund reviews your application. If he or she approves the reimbursement, you will receive an ‘authorisation’. If your application is refused, we will also inform you of this.
Good to know
The allowance for enteral nutrition is a flat-rate reimbursement that covers the nutrition, the pump, and the materials. The intervention cannot exceed the actual amounts paid.
